THE POSTER – Art, activism and democratic expression

Posters have been used to give marginalised causes a voice for over 500 years now. As a tool to mobilise movements, inspire, and simplify complex political ideals into public discourse.

In this workshop, we aim to help participants not only get a better understanding of the history and purpose of posters, but also let them explore their own voice. In the first half of the workshop, we look at historical case studies (anti-war movements, suffragettes, etc.) as our basis of exploring how design can have an impact on conflict de-escalation, as it brings opposing viewpoints into a more understandable light, and how it can escalate change by demanding attention to what matters. Democracy succeeds on engaged citizens, and our workshop would encourage participants to express their values visually: Be it on environmental action, social justice, or unity across all divides.
